Title: "A Glimpse into the Life of a Tapanuli Orangutan"

Hello, my name is Tapanuli, and I am an orangutan belonging to the species Pongo tapanuliensis. I inhabit the lush tropical forests of Sumatra, Indonesia—a place my ancestors and I have called home for millions of years, despite the fact that humans only recognized our distinct species in 2017. What sets me apart from other orangutan species is not just my thicker, lighter fur, but also my unique genetics. We are part of an ancient lineage, having separated from other orangutans nearly three million years ago.

Unfortunately, the natural paradise that has sheltered and sustained me for so long is rapidly turning into a nightmare. The forests of Batang Toru are disappearing at an alarming rate, falling victim to rampant deforestation to make way for palm oil plantations, mining operations, and other human development projects. Although the Indonesian government has designated some parts of our habitat as protected areas, I witness daily how these laws are often disregarded, allowing chainsaws to continue to decimate my forest.

But the loss of my habitat isn't the only threat we face. Looming large is the construction of a substantial hydroelectric dam along the Batang Toru River. This development risks isolating our already small populations, further fragmenting our communities and dramatically reducing our chances of meeting other individuals. Such isolation would have disastrous effects on our genetic diversity and long-term survival.

We orangutans are gentle and social creatures. Our days are spent leisurely navigating the treetops, building nests to rest among the branches, and feeding on fruits, leaves, insects, and bark. Our lives are filled with simplicity and harmony, yet they are increasingly under threat from these changes to the ecosystems that once nurtured and protected us. Together with my family, I watch the devastating impact of human activity and how it threatens to erase us from our environment.

Our challenges don't end there. Our reproductive process is slow: females give birth to only one infant every six or seven years and devote many years to nurturing them to independence. This natural pace makes it nearly impossible for us to recover from the losses imposed by these looming threats. With fewer than 800 individuals remaining, each new death brings us closer to extinction. Every member of my species we lose is a fragment of an ancient legacy that fades forever.

Living constantly on the edge between survival and extinction is not easy, knowing that the world around us is changing so quickly and that my future hangs in the balance. However, a flicker of hope resides in the hearts of those working tirelessly for our survival—scientists, activists, and all those who recognize the irreplaceable value of the Tapanuli orangutans and our right to exist in these forests.

I cling to the hope that the world will soon awaken to the urgency of our plight and take action to protect us—not just for our sake, but for the entire ecosystem of which we are an integral part. We, the Tapanuli, are a piece of a much larger puzzle, and our disappearance would leave a void detrimental to the entire region's biodiversity.

I want to believe in a future where the generations of orangutans who come after me can live in peace, free from the constant fear of environmental destruction. A future where our forests can thrive once more, returning to the safe haven they have been for millennia. Until then, I will endure, as I have always done, hoping that the resilience of my species will prevail and that we can continue to tell our stories amidst the towering trees of Sumatra.
